50-for-50: First Week of H&R Block's 1,000 Win $1,000 Daily Sweepstakes Results in Winners From Every State

With Thousands Cashing in Daily, Lives Are Changing

KANSAS CITY, MO -- (Marketwired) -- 01/22/16 -- As H&R Block (NYSE: HRB), the world's largest consumer tax preparation company, wraps up the first week of drawings for its 1,000 Win $1,000 Daily Sweepstakes there have been winners in every state and they are picking up their checks and being celebrated at local tax offices.

"In addition to the sweepstakes being H&R Block's way of putting the 'fun' back in Refund Season, the winners are sharing how winning $1,000 is impacting their lives," said Kathy Collins, H&R Block's chief marketing officer. "Some of the winners now are able to buy things they need for their children or pay for car repairs. We are hearing from many who are now able to take a much-needed vacation. However we can help bring a little joy to someone's life, we're happy to do that."

Playing the name game

Refund Season 2016 is off to a great start for the winners of the 1,000 Win $1,000 Daily Sweepstakes, as seen on this interactive map showing the states where the winners live. The winners come from all 50 states and Puerto Rico. A winner also was reported in Rome -- the city in Georgia. Here are some interesting facts about those who won the first week:

  • There was a winner in the city of Winner in South Dakota
  • Alphabetically the cities in which people have won range from Abbeville in Louisiana to Zeeland in Michigan
  • There were winners in cities named Salem in Oregon, Missouri, Connecticut, New Jersey and Ohio
  • Winners' names range from Abby to Yvette for women and Aaron to Zachary for men, with Jennifer and Michael being the most popular names
  • Smith is the most popular last name, but is being given a run for its money by Rodriguez.

When the stakes are high, a win like this can mean a lot

Marie and Henry "Burger" Boerboom can use a lot of numbers to tell the story of their lives together. They've been married 33 years, have raised six children and have seven grandchildren. Lately, some of the numbers that tell their story haven't been as filled with joy; five and a half hours is how long it takes the Boerbooms to drive from their home in Bluefield, West Va., to the University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington as Marie undergoes tests to prepare for a double-lung transplant.

But, because the Boerbooms are in the habit of doing their taxes as soon as they can every season, they added a new number to their situation: 1,000 -- dollars.

"I always do [my taxes] as soon as I get my W-2," said Henry, who balances being a part-time maintenance worker with caring for Marie. "We really need four-wheel drive when the weather is bad to get off the hill we live on and this money will help."

It all adds up to making a difference in people's lives

The first drawing for the sweepstakes was Jan. 16. Anyone who files their taxes in a participating H&R Block office by Feb. 15 can be automatically entered into the sweepstakes.

"In addition to serving our millions of clients this year, we are so excited to be giving 32,000 people an extra $1,000 in Refund Season 2016," Collins said.
